Why most newborn lists are longer than they need to be

Ask ten parents what a newborn actually needs and you’ll get ten different answers — usually followed by “honestly, we barely used half of it.” The wipe warmer, the second playmat, the tiny shoes for a baby who can’t walk: sweet, but not essential.

Clothing and changing

Muslins and feeding

If one item earns its place above all others, it’s the humble muslin. Feeding, burping, mopping up, shading a pram, comforting — one square of cotton does it all, which is why babies (and parents) love cotton muslins so much. Buy more than you think you need.

Alongside those, keep it simple: bibs, burp cloths, and bottles if you’re bottle feeding. A proper feeding set can wait until weaning, though it’s a lovely thing to have tucked away ready.

Comfort and soothing

Newborns are adjusting to a very loud, bright world, and a few comfort items genuinely help.

• A muslin comforter or small teddy — often the one thing they bond with for years
• A dummy clip, so the dummy stays off the floor
• A soft blanket for the pram and the sofa

Something to keep, not just use
